Reflections for Staying Attuned
What’s the best gift you ever received? Why was it so special?
Most likely it stood out as special because, in the receiving,
you felt special. Most likely, it was not so much what
you received, but that you felt seen by the gift
giver and aware that your needs and wants were considered.
Ultimately, in receiving this special gift, you felt a nourishing
connection with the gift giver.
When our needs and wants are noticed--accepted--by the gift giver,
the gift feels special; we feel special. Acknowledging this and
experiencing enhanced nourishing connections, helps us to understand
how important it is to feel accepted, to honor needs and wants. In
the midst of giving to others at this time of year,
consider--without judgment or shame--tending to your own needs and
wants with the generous spirit of the best gift giver.
Giving is the “soul food” that feeds our relationships with others,
and it starts with giving to yourself. Taking care of yourself this
holiday season may be the best gift you give. It also just might be
one of the best gifts you receive!
Stay Attuned Tip
During this stressful season, consider what gifts you might give to
yourself that will acknowledge your needs and wants. Make sure you are
nourishing yourself with food, rest, and down time. Slow down when you
reach the buffet table and decide what you really want, what
will really nourish you, and then honor your body's signal of fullness.
At an under-nourishing party, allow yourself to go home early and curl
up with that book!
