Reflections for Staying Attuned
Do you try to change your eating, and then feel like a failure when
you don’t succeed beyond the initial enthusiasm?
If we make plans about our food and eating that are actually out of
reach, these plans will eventually become a source of frustration.
And that frustration can lead to guilt and loss of self-esteem. The
resulting sense of failure frequently leads us to make more
strenuous resolutions to change ourselves. These new goals are often
further out of our reach and result in even more tension. And how do
we, as emotional eaters, typically relieve tension?…
Consider instead making small changes that gradually become part of
your lifestyle. Consider also that each of these small changes is
made up of even smaller steps. Change is a result
of these smaller steps. It can be difficult to value and honor these
small steps in a culture that promotes “overnight success.” However,
these small steps are the only way to create lasting change. Know
that each and every step matters.
Stay Attuned Tip
Today, pay attention to your eating and food goals. Pick one goal, and
say it aloud. Now, make it smaller. And then make it smaller again. Now,
restate the goal aloud. If you can, make it smaller still. When you can
truly no longer make the goal smaller, then you have found the step that
matters.
Stay Attuned Affirmation
"Change will happen as I honor the small steps I take."
What's New at Nourishing Connections
Fat Politics: The Real Story Behind America’s Obesity Epidemic by
J. Eric Oliver has caught our attention. Oliver believes it is not
obesity, but the panic over obesity, that is the real health problem. He
argues that our current focus on obesity will cause Americans to
undertake crash diets, diet drugs and weight-loss surgeries rather than
tackling the real issues. He contends that weight gain may actually be a
“benign symptom” of the larger problems—unhealthy diets and lack of
physical activity. Oliver, a political scientist, also provides an
engaging critique of obesity research and takes a close look at the
socioeconomic and cultural forces behind it. He also offers a
fascinating exposé of a self-interested “public health establishment,”
that receives monies by pushing treatment of obesity. Fat Politics
provides a compelling challenge to our traditional views of “obesity.”
