Reflections for Staying Attuned

Let's take a journey back in our lives. As infants, our bodies naturally felt and communicated our hunger-- we cried when we were hungry, no matter what time of day or night. When we were not hungry, we would refuse to eat. As children, we did not judge food or the way we ate, we did not weigh and measure our food. We knew what we wanted and how much we needed because we stayed in close communication with our bodies.

Sadly, along the way, many of us lost our abilities to listen to and respond to our hunger and to know what would fulfill that hunger. Instead of relying on our internal cues, we have found rules to determine what is "okay" to eat and when and how much of it we should eat. We have lost the freedom around food that is our birthright. How do we reconnect with that inner child who enjoyed that freedom?

We need to return to a more simplistic relationship with food. After all, food is simple. It's carbohydrate, it's protein, it's fat. We tend to make it more than what it is. While we would like food to solve our problems, it is really meant to nourish and fuel our bodies.

So, can food ever just be food? Absolutely. Food only has power if we give it power. We need carbohydrates. We need protein. We need fat. We deserve to have all of them, and we deserve to have them taste good without guilt. There are reasons food tastes good: We are supposed to eat it, and we need it to survive. We might as well enjoy it along the way!

Stay Attuned Tip

As you go through your day, try to look at food differently. Look at how it works for your body and soul: nourishing, fueling, tasting good, and giving pleasure. Notice how food feels friendly when you are eating in an attuned way. And notice, when eating is less attuned, if food is there for you as a friend. Can you feel the difference?
